Public invited to name adorable white-tailed eagle chick born at Glengarriff in Cork

The public are being asked to help name an adorable eagle chick before she flees the nest.

The 11-week-old white-tailed eagle was born in Glengarriff Woods Nature Reserve in Co Cork and is the first female to fledge here in over 100 years.

Her mother is one of 100 birds brought from Norway between 2007 and 2011 as part of a white-tailed eagle reintroduction project.

The chick has been practicing her flying, with her longest flight so far clocking in at 2km - but she still doesn't have a name.

The bird has already shown she is a survivor as she was raised by a single mother rather than both parents after her dad disappeared when she was just two weeks old.

The chick would not have survived without the help of National Parks and Wildlife Service who provided supplementary food with the assistance of local fishermen, ferrymen and Fota Wildlife Park.

A spokesperson said: "Everyone at Glengarriff Woods Nature Reserve and in the National Parks and Wildlife Service are really grateful to them all."

When tagged, the young eagle weighed in at a whopping 6.8kg and is in very good health.

Over the next few weeks, she is likely to leave the nest and possibly the local area but she has been fitted with a satellite tag so her travels will be recorded.

Thousands of people have enjoyed watching her grow on the live Glengarriff EagleCam over the last few months which can be watched on the Glengarriff Woods NR Facebook page.

And now her fans are being asked to help name her.

To enter the competition, just suggest a name in the comments on the Glengarriff Nature Reserve Facebook Page - @GlengarriffWoodsNatureReserve - and the staff there will pick a winner on August 14.

While the search for her moniker goes on, the public have been given one strict warning in case they have any feather-brained ideas.

A spokesperson said: "Eagle McEagleface is not a name and will not be considered!"
