Public Health Scotland Covid update today as 268 new cases confirmed

Another 268 Covid cases have been diagnosed in Scotland within the last 24 hours – bringing the total for the pandemic so far to 230,042 from almost two million tests carried out.

Data has been published this afternoon by the Scottish Government and Public Health Scotland as part of the national COVID-19 daily briefing.

According to Public Health Scotland's rolling seven-day infection rate per 100,000 population, Glasgow City has the highest infection rate in the country – at 104.6 as of Monday, May 17.

The second-highest is East Renfrewshire which has a rate of 94.2 while Midlothian (57.3) has the third-highest rate.

Locally, South Ayrshire's infection rate stands at 16.9 with East Ayrshire's at 21.3 and North Ayrshire's at 26.7.

Currently, 24 of Scotland's 32 council regions have an infection rate below the national average of 35.5.

No further deaths have been announced in the last 24 hours which means 7,664 people have passed away since March 2020.

However, data from the National Records of Scotland (NRS) shows 10,104 deaths had been registered up to Sunday, May 9 where the disease was mentioned on the death certificate.

Across the UK, the figure is 127,684 as of last night.

The number of newly-reported positive coronavirus cases recorded by NHS Ayrshire & Arran has increased by 11 to 17,203.

Of the new cases, seven were from North Ayrshire and four were attributed to East Ayrshire. There were zero new cases in South Ayrshire.

Zero new cases were also recorded in Dumfries & Galloway, Highland, Inverclyde, Orkney Islands and West Dunbartonshire.

There are fewer than five patients being treated for the disease in Ayrshire hospitals, and fewer than five in ICUs. Nationally, 70 people are in hospital and there are four in ICU.

A total of 3,045,152 people have received the first dose of the Covid vaccination and 1,669,469 have received their second dose.
