A top health official has described the “ferociousness” of Covid after her partner died of the virus.
Public Health Scotland’s Chief Officer Manira Ahmad, who heads up the data unit, said the death was devastating for her and daughter Anisa.
The 42-year-old mum-of-one, who is on compassionate leave following the death of her unnamed partner, said: “We must not underestimate the ferociousness of Covid-19.
"We can’t become complacent or stop these simple routines to help reduce the spread.
“Anisa just lost her dad to this virus. No child should have to go through this.
“Please don’t let this virus take more of our loved ones.
“At times I think I can handle this, I will be there for Anisa, but when I stop and let the air around me come to a pause I realise the gravity.
“Tomorrow will never be the same and now a void exists that nothing can fill.”
Ahmad was due to attend a conference with Public Health Scotland at the end of last month but pulled out after Anisa tested positive for Covid.
The agency said it was supporting Ahmad through her loss.
A spokesman said: “We are aware of the tragic loss that one of our colleagues has experienced as a result of Covid-19.
“Manira and her family are in all of our thoughts at this very sad and difficult time.
“The pandemic has brought challenges and tragedy to many across Scotland. Getting vaccinated is the best protection you can have.”
