A primary school at the centre of a Covid outbreak has seen 12 teachers test positive for the virus.
Braehead Primary in Ayr, which was closed yesterday, will remain shut until at least Monday, March 22.
It has now emerged at least a dozen staff have been struck with the virus, along with a number of pupils.
A source told Ayrshire Live: "It has spread through the school like wildfire.
"And only the younger year groups have been back in class during recent weeks.
"So the big concern moving forward is what would happen on Monday when everyone returns?
"It just feels like we're going back to square one with pupils, staff and classes being asked to isolate left, right and centre."
Health teams ordered a full shutdown of the school yesterday afternoon in a bid to "avoid further spread of the virus".
Nearby Heathfield Primary was placed under similar measures, with both schools and their nurseries now shut for a period of at least 10 days.
And it's understood a number of other schools and nurseries across Ayrshire are dealing with isolated outbreaks.
Pupils at Braehead will continue to learn remotely while the school remains shut.
Ayr MSP John Scott said: "This will be very worrying news for the staff, their families and the families of any pupils involved at both Braehead and Heathfield.
"I have been in touch with both South Ayrshire Council and NHS Ayrshire & Arran to seek an update on the measures being taken to support everyone involved and to ensure that the potential for wider transmission within the community is minimised."
