Public Health England has issued an urgent cold weather alert as temperatures take a nosedive across the UK.
The Met Office has forecast that a spell of cold weather is expected to last until 9am Thursday 10 December and will affect many parts of the country.
Severe cold weather conditions are likely in the North East, Yorkshire and the Humber, East Midlands, the East of England and South East England.
Cold weather can cause health risks and now Public Health England is urging people to look out for the vulnerable as temperatures plummet.
Dr Ishani Kar-Purkayastha, Consultant in Public Health at PHE, said: "Try to heat your home to at least 18°C, particularly if you have reduced mobility, are 65 and over, or have a health condition, such as heart or lung disease.
"Keep moving too if you can. Get up and walk around and spread housework throughout the day to help keep yourself warm. Food is also a vital source of energy so have plenty of hot food and drinks.
"Remember to check up on frail or older neighbours and relatives at this time, particularly if they live alone, and remember to follow COVID-19 social distancing guidance when looking out for others."
The Met Office forecast for the North West said: "This evening rain will become less widespread, with heavier patches for some overnight.
"Winds will strengthen into the night, then gradually ease through the early hours, but remain strongest along coastal areas, limiting much fog and frost formation. Minimum temperature 4 °C.
