Public Health England comments on high coronavirus case rate in village near Bristol

Health officials have confirmed that high coronavirus case rates in a village near Bristol were not caused by an outbreak.

Winterbourne repeatedly recorded the highest seven-day case rate in the Bristol region last week, with a figure that was at one point more than eight times the national average.

However, due to the low case rates seen nationally at the moment, Public Health England (PHE) has advised that rates can be skewed even by a small number of cases.

In the seven days up to April 26, Winterbourne recorded a rate of 188.9 cases per 100,000 of the population, but this was based on only 12 new cases recorded within that week-long period.

Nationally in England, the case rate at that time was at 23.4 cases per 100,000.

PHE has now confirmed that it is not aware of any COVID-19 outbreaks currently in the Winterbourne area.

A spokesperson advised Bristol Live: "There is no outbreak to account for this this - a small number of cases can cause a noticeable change in rates."

The case rate in the large South Gloucestershire village has rapidly decreased since last week, according to the latest available data.

In the seven days ending May 1, the most recent displayed on the Government's interactive map, there were three cases recorded in Winterbourne.

This gave it a rolling rate of 47.2 cases per 100,000 of the population, which is still classed as "above average" but is only a quarter of the rate is was recording only days earlier.

According to a Bristol City Council update shared yesterday (Thursday, April 6), the rolling case rate across Bristol was just 12 cases per 100,000 of the population.

This accounts for the seven days up to April 30, and compares to a national figure of 23 cases per 100,000.
