Public Health directors reveal what Nottinghamshire's 'R' rate is

Nottinghamshire's coronavirus reproduction 'R' rate is above the East Midlands average, Public Health officials have revealed.

Currently, the rate of spread of the coronavirus infection across the county sits between 0.8 - 1.1.

If the reproduction number is higher than one, then the number of cases increases exponentially.

But if the number is lower, the disease will eventually peter out, as not enough new people are being infected to sustain the outbreak.

This means the 'R' rate for Nottinghamshire is currently higher than what Government officials say it is in the the East Midlands as whole.

On Friday, June 26, the Government Office for Science and the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE) said the 'R' rate for the region was around 0.7 to 0.9, while the growth rate remained at minus 4% to minus 2% per day.

The Local Outbreak Plan for the area was also revealed yesterday (June 30), spearheaded by Alison Challenger, director of Public Health Nottingham and Jonathan Gribbin, director of Public Health Nottinghamshire.

Mr Gribbin said the county was at a "critical point" but says Nottingham has been fortunate that it has not seen the same numbers as with other areas, such as Leicester which is now the first to be locally locked down.

More details about the Local Lockdown Plan can be read here.
