Public Health data shows spike in Covid-19 infections in West Lothian over last week as county is moved to Level One

Despite the spike in Covid-19 infections over the past week it was confirmed today that the county is moving down to Level One.

The latest Public Health Scotland data as of May 31 shows there were 10 new infections.

Across the week between May22 to May 28 there were another 59 infections.

This means the weekly positivity rate is now 31.7 per 100,000 residents in West Lothian.

Meanwhile Nicola Sturgeon had an update on Covid-19 restrictions today in parliament and confirmed West Lothian will move down to Level One as of midnight on Friday.

Under Level One a wide variety of restrictions will be lifted.

The First Minister said “at this critical stage to avoid being knocked off course, we must err on the side of caution.”

She says that although Scotland is vaccinating as fast as possible there is still a sizeable amount of people still receive their jags.

Therefore, she said that places with high infection rates would still have to live under restrictions for the time being.

Edinburgh, Glasgow, Midlothian, Dundee, Renfrewshire, East Renfrewshire, all three Ayrshire councils, and North and South Lanarkshire will remain at Level Two for now.

Ms Sturgeon said: “There are a number of local authority areas in addition to Glasgow that are not currently meeting the criteria for Level One.

“Indeed if we looked at just the raw numbers it could be argued that some of these areas should be in Level Three.

“However our judgement on the emerging evidence from the impact of vaccines is that Level Three would not be proportionate at this stage.”

Ms Sturgeon also announced that Shetland, Orkney and the Western Isles will shift down to Level 0.
