Public health alert issued for deli meat due to listeria risk

  • The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service issued a public health alert for Daisy Brand headcheese due to possible Listeria contamination.
  • The alert followed an investigation into a listeria outbreak in Illinois, where an unopened product sample tested positive for listeria monocytogenes, sickening at least three people.
  • No recall was issued because the affected headcheese products, produced on January 20, 2026, and marked with a 'Use By' date of March 26, 2026, are no longer available for purchase.
  • These products, identifiable by establishment number 'EST. 21406', were distributed to retail deli locations in Illinois and Indiana.
  • Consumers are urged to dispose of any remaining headcheese and thoroughly clean their refrigerators to prevent cross-contamination, as Listeria is a serious foodborne illness.
