Public golf courses to reopen in Merseyside borough

Wirral’s municipal golf courses will begin to reopen from Friday as part of a phased return.

The Warren in Wallasey will open first on Friday, June 5, and will be followed by the remaining courses soon after.

Players should be aware of guidelines introduced for their own protection.

They include:

  • Tee times are limited to a maximum of four players. Players from separate households must remain two metres apart.
  • Tee times will be available Monday-Sunday, 9am-6.30pm.
  • The course will remain closed outside of these hours for customers wanting to start their game.
  • Golfers must not come to the course without booking a tee time online first.
  • Junior members must be accompanied by an adult.

Currently Wirral Council’s leisure membership Invigor8 remains frozen.

Therefore tee times will be charged at normal rates and will be available to anyone wanting to play at the Warren on a pre-pay and play basis only.

The phased return of the borough’s public golf courses will make sure each one can open safely and with enough time for staff to get the courses in playable condition.

Damian Walsh, Wirral Council’s senior manager of leisure services, said: “We know many players have missed using the courses and we’re really pleased we can start to open them again.

“However, It’s important we don’t rush into decisions like these and that’s why we’re phasing them back slowly. The health and safety of our communities, businesses and staff must be our top priority during this process.

“When you do attend one of our courses over the next few weeks and months, all we ask is that players read and follow the safety guidelines published on our website in full.

“We all have a part to play to make sure everyone remains safe while out on the courses.”
