Public evacuated from Cardiff Central station after reports train hit passenger stood on platform

People were evacuated out of Cardiff Central train station on Saturday night after a man was allegedly struck by a train on one of the platforms.

Witnesses have described how people were asked to leave the station at around 6pm on Saturday evening, just hours after the final game of the Six Nations tournament at the nearby Principality Stadium.

The man is understood to have been injured by a Great Western Railway train as it pulled into platform one and two at Cardiff's main station. Witnesses have also described waiting outside in Central Square while an air ambulance arrived at the scene.

A Welsh Ambulance spokesperson said the service received a call at 5.52pm to reports of a person being struck by a train in Cardiff Central train station. They added: "We sent an emergency ambulance, duty operations manager and the Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service to the scene. We were supported by the Wales Air Ambulance and our cycle response unit.

"One person was transported by road to the University Hospital of Wales Cardiff for further treatment."

Three fire engines also attended along with other emergency services and Transport for Wales confirmed that many services were delayed. A TfW spokesman was unable to add any further detail on Sunday morning.

A spokesman for South Wales Fire and Rescue said the service was called at 5.57pm from transport police requesting their attendance. They added: "We had quite a large attendance there including three fire engines, a rescue tender and a number of fire officers. [The incident involved] a male casualty on the tracks. We left the incident at 6.24pm."

A spokesman for the Wales Air Ambulance confirmed it sent two medical teams - the air ambulance and a rapid response vehicle. He added: "Following our arrival at 6.01pm, our consultant and critical care practitioners administered critical care treatments at the scene. We then escorted the patient to the University Hospital of Wales in a road ambulance."

Great Western Railway and the British Transport Police have been contacted for comment.
