Public domain works planned for suburb

Mayfield is in line for a spruce up under a Labor-led council with its main business strip set to be upgraded as part of a multi-stage urban renewal project.

Labor councillors will move a motion on Tuesday night confirming Mayfield as the next suburb to receive an upgrade under the council's Local Centres Program.

The program, initiated in 2016, has included more than $13 million worth of street and public domain upgrades to date in Beresfield, Carrington, Merewether, Kotara and Wallsend.

Furthers works are in progress in Stockton and also being planned for Shortland, New Lambton and Wallsend.

The council also recently committed to making improvements in Waratah and Georgetown next.

But the Mayfield project, due to the length of the business area along Maitland Road, will be the most complex project undertaken.

Under Labor's plan, the project would include new footpaths, road renewal, drainage upgrades, new street trees, gardens, furniture, lighting, parking and cycleway improvements.

The city's facade improvement scheme would also form part of the project, offering financial assistance to small businesses and building owners to improve their shopfronts and enhance outdoor dining and trade.

"Maitland Road at Mayfield is a significant and historic gateway to our City, and is a much-loved and popular local shopping precinct. But with recent business growth and redevelopment it requires significant urban renewal to bring the public spaces up to the standards our community expects today," Newcastle lord mayor Nuatali Nelmes said.

"The facade improvement scheme will also assist local small businesses to renew their shop fronts and provide enhanced customer experiences. Beautification and greening of Maitland Road will give local residents a renewed sense of confidence, pride and liveability in Mayfield as the local area continues to grow."

Ahead of the opening of the Coles supermarket on Maitland Road, Mayfield Business Improvement Association chair Warren Pullbrook said there was a sense of transition in the suburb.

"Business brings business," he told the Newcastle Herald at the time.

Mr Pullbrook said Mayfield was on the "rebound" and there was "a lot happening", but conceded the streets had "looked a bit average".

"I think the street appeal will be miles better. We're looking forwards, not backwards," he said.

Labor's Ward 1 candidate, deputy lord mayor Declan Clausen, said the street upgrade, which is yet to be costed, would be delivered "in partnership with the local business community".

"A proposal like this requires experience to deliver, and a council focused on important infrastructure works and financial sustainability," he said.
