Public can now move home during coronavirus lockdown under new government guidance

The government has announced people will now be able to move home during the coronavirus pandemic - as long as they adhere to new guidelines.

The housing and moving market was brought to a halt as the global outbreak continues, with mortgages and remortgages unable to take place as homes couldn't be valued during the crisis.

Movers who had secured a purchase or deal on a new home had to stay put as removal firms were unable work.

Social distancing guidelines and preventative lockdown measures have caused havoc for the housing market, with the Government estimating 450,000 moves were placed on hold.

But in England, the home purchase and moving market has now been given the go ahead to restart, with estate agents allowed to conduct in-person viewings and surveyors allowed to inspect and value houses, as reported by MoneySavingExpert.

The change to guidance has only happened in England, with no current update to moving guidance issued for Wales, Northern Ireland or Scotland yet.

The Housing Minister, Robert Jenrick, announced on May 12 that the home move market could restart again subject to social distancing guidelines like maintaining a two metre distance between people.

The changes to the latest government guidance means estate agents' offices will be allowed to reopen, with estate agents conducting viewings with potential buyers or renters.

Removal firms will be able to operate again, meaning those moves that had been put on hold because they couldn't hire a removal company will now be able to take place.

People who want to move will now be able to have their homes valued as surveyors and home valuers will be permitted to go into homes to complete their surveys.

Appliances and services will be able to be installed or fixed as people move home because technicians and construction businesses will be allowed to work in people's homes.

The Government has issued guidance to moving firms on how to conduct business while continuing to adhere to social distancing guidelines.

The Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish governments have not changed their lockdown advice, meaning home moves continue to be on hold.
