Public advised to avoid area near Spelga Dam due to mountain fire

The public have been advised to avoid Spelga Dam following a fire in the early hours of this morning (Wednesday March 23). It has not been determined what caused the blaze but Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service are at the scene.

The fire is believed to have spread over three mountains near the reservoir in County Down, with the force currently situated at Kilkeel Road. A statement on Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service's Twitter account read: "Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service are still in attendance at Kilkeel Road, Spelga Dam. Three mountains are involved in fire. We request that the public avoid this area."

This comes after a large fire was reported on Monday evening on Black Mountain, situated 40 miles north of Spelga Dam. Two fire appliances were sent to the scene in West Belfast at 5.50pm and left at 7.30pm. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
