Pub where police found drugs and £45k could be forced to close

A Merseyside pub could lose its licence next week, after bags of class A drugs and £45,000 cash were discovered inside.

Three men and a woman were arrested after police raided The Railway pub in Waterloo on Saturday, September 18.

A private meeting was held on Thursday September 23, following police officers urgently asking Sefton Council to review the terms of the pub’s licence.

Now a full hearing has been scheduled to take place next Thursday (October 14), to determine the future of the pub.

Operation Pelican officers swooped on The Railway on Saturday after "community intelligence" led them to the site.

They found large amounts of suspected cocaine, mixing agent and drug paraphernalia.

Around £45,000 - believed to be from the proceeds of crime - was also seized.

Police arrested two men, aged 50 and 42, and a woman, aged 34, on suspicion of possession with intent to supply class A drugs.

A 60-year-old man was also arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply class A drugs and handling stolen goods.

Council documents say the full amount of Class A drugs seized is "still to be confirmed".

Four people were arrested, including the father of the licence holder.

Sefton's Community Policing Superintendent Graeme Robson says he believes the pub is "associated with serious crime" and that there is "a significant risk to public safety".

Supt. Robson also said the matter is being treated as a serious crime.

The licencing review will take place at Bootle Town Hall on Thursday, October 14, at 11am.
