Pub tries to break world record for number of Nigels

A UK pub is planning to break a world record for the largest single gathering of Nigels.

Nigel Smith, landlord of the Fleece Inn in Bretforton, Worcestershire, is hoping to get more Nigels under the same roof than has ever been seen beforr.

He launched his first gathering of Nigels at the pub last year after learning that no babies had been named Nigel in the UK for several years, reports The Mirror .

Now in the next phase of his plan to stop the name Nigel being wiped out, he is planning on getting as many Nigels together as possible.

Nigel said: “Before we become extinct, we felt we ought to have a gathering. It’s no longer a popular name but surely there are enough of us to try and create our lasting mark.

“Non-Nigels are welcome but will have a badge saying they are not the real thing.”

Every Nigel at the Fleece Inn in Bretforton, Worcs, on September 28 will get a free drink. Entertainment will include a Nigel-based playlist.

According to figures in August, the last UK Nigels were born in 2015 when nine babies were given the name.

At its peak in 1964 it was the 23rd most-used name. Its slump has been partly blamed on  Brexit  politician Nigel Farage.

The name comes from the Irish Niall, meaning champion.

Vikings changed it to Njal and took it to Normandy where it was Latinized as Nigellus and introduced to England, where it became plain Nigel.
