Pub stays open despite customer reportedly testing positive for coronavirus

A Merseyside pub is opening for business as usual - despite one of its customers "testing positive" for Covid-19.

The Coach & Horses pub in Maghull has undergone a "deep clean" since a potential positive case of coronavirus was revealed after a customer visited last Saturday night.

The pub took the step of posting a notice on a local community Facebook page, which recommended anyone who was in the pub after 9pm on Saturday to get tested, while stressing it was "an unofficial case."

It added that it had so far not been contacted by the NHS official Test & Trace programme.

Pub owner Tom Nash said: "A young lady came in the pub on Saturday at 9pm - we found out on Monday she'd tested positive.

"We already have our procedures in place for test and trace. We have third party contract cleaning to deep clean and sanitise throughout the day.

"We also took advice from Greene King that we didn't have to close."

He added: "There's only one member of staff working the floor. There was no immediate contact with any of the staff and none of them are at risk."

Mr Nash said the pub practised responsible social distancing.

A spokeswoman for pub operator Greene King said: The Coach & Horses and this is one of our tenanted pubs, meaning we’re not involved in the day to day running of the pub, but we’re there to support our tenants and the tenant for the Coach & Horses is keeping us up to date.

"We’re confident that the team have followed Government guidance up to now and they will take the appropriate action if they are contacted by NHS Test & Trace."
