Pub sparks outrage after adding 'Covid-19 charge' onto bill

A pub in Dublin sparked outrage over the weekend after a photo of a receipt went viral on social media.

The picture showed how a small group ate at Mulligans of Sandymount, enjoying a burger, a taco and some cheesecake.

With some drinks, their total amount hit €49.85 but if they'd handed over a €50 note, they wouldn't have been handed any change - instead they had to search their pockets for more money to give.

That's because the owners of the pub had included a €2 'Covid-19 charge' on their bill, reports Dublin Live.

The charge divided those who saw the receipt, with some outraged by the fee, but others saying they didn't really mind.

One unhappy customer went as far as to brand the charge a 'disgrace'.

They said: "The Covid charge is a disgrace, no problems with the price of the food or drinks as they are the prices around those areas. I doubt Brown's of Sandymount or BuJo burger in the same area are doing this. Mulligans of Sandymount should look at themselves."

Another commented: "I wouldn’t really be for it. The rate reduction and wage subsidy scheme are a big help. I don’t think it warrants a 'Covid charge' too, the optics of this are brutal."

However not everyone was bothered by it.

"Private company is entitled to charge what they want and consumers are entitled to shop somewhere else if they don't like it," replied a different person.

Someone else added: "Do you know how Covid has affected the staff? How hard they are working to make it safer for customers? Rapid new normal? Begrudge €2, don't eat out. End of."

A spokesperson for a spokesman for Mulligans of Sandymount said: "I hope people would understand why that charge is on the receipt and what it's going towards."

The pub declined to give further comment.
