Pub shut for 'flagrant' Covid breaches after police called to 'disturbance'

A Widnes pub has been shut for multiple Covid-19 breaches.

The Crow’s Nest on Moorfield Road was closed yesterday with the order to be reviewed after seven days.

Halton Borough Council said it had shown “complete disregard” for the coronavirus rules.

Cheshire Police officers discovered the breaches after being called to a “disturbance” at the pub on Friday.

A Halton Council spokesperson said customers were seen “mixing and mingling” with different groups and moving around the premises without face coverings.

Punters were also being served alcohol at the bar and without a substantial meal.

The council used the evidence provided by the police and its coronavirus enforcement powers to issue an order to shut the pub.

The ECHO attempted to approach the pub for a response to the council's statement.

The council spokesperson said: “The majority of Halton’s licensed premises are complying with the Government rules on Covid-safe practices and restrictions on the sale of alcohol which are intended to control the spread of coronavirus.

“In this particular case the evidence obtained by the police indicated a complete disregard for those rules.

“In order to protect public health and prevent the spread of infection the council was left with no option but to serve a direction notice to close the premises.”

Earlier this month the council took similar action against a Widnes barbershop over what it called a "blatant refusal" to wear PPE.
