Pub's touching tribute to make sure the memory of its regulars lives on

This colourful mural has been painted to make sure the memory of a Tameside pub's regulars will live on at their local.

Former punters at The Queens, in Hyde, are now being commemorated on a memory tree mural in the pub's beer garden.

Friends and relatives have now begun adding names to the mural to help make sure their loved ones are not forgotten.

“I felt for a long time that as a pub we should have some way of remembering the people who would come to The Queens," said Gaynor Duffy, 54, who runs The Queens.

"Our customers are the heart and soul of the pub and I wanted their names to live on.

"So, having seen various murals around Manchester city centre, I thought we could use a blank wall at the back of the beer garden for the memorial tree.

“The tree is already something of a talking point. We never want to forget our customers and the mural is a way of honouring their memory and the important part they played in the success of our pub."

The mural was hand-painted by Mia Pike, a Salford University student, who completed the work in less than four weeks.

Names added so far include Covid victims and those who have died from old age (Manchester Evening News)

Names added to the wall so far include people who have died due to Covid, as well as other former punters who passed away after ill health or old age.

“One young man came in and wrote down the name of his grandad who had drunk at our pub for around 40 years," added Gaynor, who has worked with Joseph Holt for more than 20 years.

“I think physically writing down the name is itself very therapeutic as well as a lovely long term way to keep them in mind."
