Pub's hilarious sign to attract customers after busy road 'turns into pond'

A pub landlord called for his punters to 'wade' into his pub for a pint after a leak caused flooding at his doorstep. Nigel Maloney put up a sign saying 'wet feet welcome' after a flood broke out on Moss Bank Way in Bolton just steps away from the Ainsworth Arms.

Motorists and residents were stunned yesterday morning (September 29) when a leak sent a barrage of water onto the busy road. A video taken by local pub owner Nigel Maloney shows drivers attempting to avoid the massive puddle in the middle of the road as well as damaged cobbles on Halliwell Road.

Owner of the Ainsworth Arms, Nigel Maloney said: “My member of staff arrives at 11 and I was making sure the door was opening and then I saw it coming down. I thought a pond or a pool had burst and it went on for a considerable amount of time the amount of water was far too much.

“The workmen came and then it stopped but it was running for about an hour. I’ve put a sign outside because I want people wading across for a pint.”

Residents were left without water following the leak that came from a street in the area with the water running downhill through Halliwell Road and leaving a small pond on Moss Bank Way.

Barmaid for the Ainsworth Arms, Marli Lessells said: “It was mad. I saw it when I came into work this morning. I usually come from that side of the road as well so it was a good thing I came that way otherwise I would have been in a bit of a predicament wouldn’t I?”

On Thursday, a United Utilities spokesperson, said: “We were made aware of a leak on Moss Bank Way in the Smithills area of Bolton this morning. Our teams quickly isolated the leak and will be carrying out the necessary repairs this afternoon.”
