Pub owner in tier 3 village says customers are already planning to drink elsewhere

A pub owner in Linby says he is already losing customers to tier 2 areas ahead of the restrictions being implemented this week.

Graeme Beal, 52, has owned the Horse and Groom pub in Main Street since March 2014.

The village is set to be placed under tier 3 restrictions as part of the Gedling borough.

Mr Beal says he is losing customers as a result of the changes, who were planning to drink in areas such as Hucknall instead, which until last night was set to stay in tier 2.

He told Nottinghamshire Live: "To be honest with you, we have gone from tier 2 to complete and utter uncertainty under tier 3.

"The issue is we had no support under tier 2, and the support under tier 3 simply isn't enough. It probably just about covers my gas bills.

"In terms of how it affects us, I'm better off just closing the doors under tier 3. I have a moral and ethical obligation to support the community and my team - that's the biggest thing that keeps me up at night."

Mr Beal estimates he lost out on about £250,000 of turnover during lockdown and lost nearly £50,000 more on upkeep of the pub during that time.

The pub didn't qualify to receive any financial support from the government over the lockdown period, due to having a turnover of over £51,000, and this has left him worrying about the Horse and Groom's future.

Mr Beal continued: "Every single announcement Boris has made has absolutely slayed our trade.

"For the following three days, every time, we've had next to no-one in. Look at it now, it's Tuesday lunchtime and I've got two customers.

"We just have to try to break even until Christmas, and hope things happen that allow for things to pick back up.

"If we don't manage to do that, I have 20 people from the local community that may be out of a job."

He has also criticised the new rules tier 3 pubs will have to abide by, asking: "What is the difference between a married couple coming in and ordering a couple of pints, and a married couple coming in and ordering some fish and chips and a couple of pints?"
