Pub landlord opens new bargain bakery in south Bristol

A pub landlord has opened a bargain bakery in south Bristol to bring in some dough while his boozers remain shut.

Andy Clark has opened the Upper Crust on East Street just a few doors down from The Assembly, one of the four pubs he runs.

Keen to ensure his new café is affordable for everyone, the prices are reasonable with the majority of cakes - including the "speciality" bread pudding - costing less than £1.

It's £2.45 for a bacon baguette while a sausage and bacon baguette is £2.75, or there's the option of the 'breakfast box' for £4.50 which includes all the ingredients needed for a hearty fry-up.

Fruit and veg is sourced from the neighbouring East Street Fruit Market - run by the "voice of Bedminster" - while meat is supplied by the nearby Stan Butt Butchers.

"Fresh bread has been really popular so far and cake sales are starting to pick up," said the 44-year-old, who has invested more than £20,000 in the business, aided by an £8,000 grant from The West of England Combined Authority (WECA).

"Our best seller so far though has been the bread pudding, which is flying out as I imagined it would.

"I think we'll be a lot busier from Monday when all the shops around here open up again. At the moment there's only Wilkos and the pound shop open at this end of East Street.

"It feels great to have a new business up and running and it's just nice to be busy again after my pubs have been shut for so long.

"There's only so many times I can clean and re-stock each of the pubs before I lose my mind, but now I'm up at 5am everyday and serving customers from 7am."

Upper Crust also offers jacket potatoes cooked fresh each day in a specialist baked spud oven, with a range of fillings to choose from.

Over the coming weeks Andy plans to upgrade the coffee machine and will also add a hot counter stocking sausage rolls, other popular baked goods and pies from Bristol institution Clark's Pies.

He will also set up some tables and chairs outside so people can watch the world go by as they enjoy their grub.

Andy will reopen The Luckwell in Luckwell Road, Bedminster on Monday (April 12) before resuming service at his other three pubs, two of which are in Swindon and Stafford, on May 17.
