Pub landlady pledges to save Sneinton Festival after this year's event is cancelled

A lack of volunteers and funding may have forced the cancellation of this year's Sneinton Festival, but one determined pub landlady has pledged to secure its future.

Three hundred people usually attend the free month-long community get-together in July, which includes live music stages, family entertainment and ends with a huge parade starting at Green's Windmill and Science Centre.

Paid for through a combination of Lottery money and year-long fundraising, organiser and Lord Nelson licensee Holly Cassidy says she could not apply for a grant for this year's event as the festival committee had disbanded due to various family commitments.

"Over Christmas we did try to recruit other people and it just didn't happen," said Holly, who has been at the helm of the popular Thurgarton Street boozer for the past two and a half years.

"Getting people on board just didn't happen quickly enough, we're all volunteers, nobody gets paid and people have family commitments," she added.

Going for more than 30 years, the festival largely takes places at the Greenway Centre, in Trent Lane, and gets many of the surrounding schools involved with making signs for the parade.

Initially starting off small, in recent years the procession has included a double decker bus and now attracts visitors from beyond the immediate community.

"People travel for it," said Holly, "People who moved out of Sneinton years ago come back for it."

To ensure the festival is back up and running next year, Holly has already put the wheels in motion and is looking to recruit a youth committee to do the organising with help from some older mentors.

She said: "The idea is we have a youth committee for next year, people aged 16, 15 years old who can organise it and we will mentor them and give advice. It take the pressure off the volunteers who have jobs and and families."

In the meantime to fill the void, Holly will be hosting a mini Sneinton Festival at The Lord Nelson from noon on July 27. The free event will include a barbecue, live music and fundraising for next year's festival.
