Pub-goers risk £200 fine for being drunk in little-known law on drinking

It's no secret that we can all fall victim to having 'one too many' when visiting a pub - but did you know that it could in fact land you a £200 fine?

Older laws can sometimes render specific actions illegal and unbeknownst to many pub punters, they might find themselves breaking the law by having an extra pint.

Now it might seem weird considering the main objective of a pub owner is to make money off of people buying a round of drinks, and yet a 150-year-old law makes life difficult.

The 150-year-old law, called Section 12 of the Licensing Act 1872, states: “Every person found drunk on any licensed premises, shall be liable to a penalty” - that means it is against the law to be inebriated (*drunk) in a pub or another public place and you risk a fine of up to £200.

Luckily, more often than not this won't be enforced - primarily, due to its outdatedness.

In this case, you might not think that a place that encourages people to drink would have a law attached to it that means, in a round and about way: if you drink too much of the alcohol that they're selling, and get drunk, you're breaking the law.
