Pub forced to close for days after heavy rain causes flooding

A busy town pub has been forced to close for several days after it was hit by flash flooding. The Aubrey Arms in Ystradgynlais experienced "extensive damage" after heavy rainfall caused flooding on Wednesday, November 2.

The pub and restaurant originally said they would close overnight and into the next day, but after assessing the damage have decided they are unable to open all weekend and have been forced to cancel bookings.

Sharing photos of the flooding, both the kitchen and car park - including a large marquee - can be seen to be buried underneath several inches of rainwater.

On Monday night until Tuesday morning a yellow warning for rain was issued which saw parts of the county hit by heavy rain, and on Wednesday a weather warning for wind was issued covering large parts of the country, with wind speeds hitting nearly 60mph in parts. Yet another warning has been put in place for thunder on Thursday afternoon into the night. You can read more about that here.

In a post announcing the damage on Facebook, the pub, which is owned by Red Dragon Pubs said: "Due to the extreme weather we had last night and looking at the extensive damage we had at the property, we will be closed this weekend and be back open for Tuesday, we are trying our best to get in contact with all of our bookings for this weekend. We apologise for any inconvenience caused!"

They had previously said that there had been an "extreme volume of flood water around and inside the building". Speaking to BBC Wales, manager Hans Erive said that the drains around the pub were blocked and cars were getting stuck.

He said: "We got to get the place decontaminated and sanitised before we can open up again. We may have loss of earnings, which with rising inflation and costs going higher and higher, is difficult for us. It's a bitter pill to swallow to be honest.

"I've worked on that site for about 12 years and I've never seen anything like this. I've lived around Ystradgynlais for the last 20 years and it's the worst I've ever seen it."

He said that as the floodwater could have come from deluged sewers there would be an extensive clean-up operation ahead before the pub could re-open.
