Pub faces objection over late opening bid

An Ayr night strip pub faces police objections over late opening plans.

The Buf in Arthur Street has applied to open from 12 noon to 2.30am on Sundays instead of closing at midnight.

The pub has been shut for years but recently started up again under new management.

Police Sergeant David Dougan said later closing would put extra pressure on officer staffing levels in the town.

Sergeant Dougan: “It has the potential for increased public disorder and criminal behaviour.”

He presented Police Scotland concerns at South Ayrshire Council’s Licensing Board last week.

Solicitor Brian Dunlop “It is a relatively minor change in opening hours.”

He added: “The truth is there are no facts identifiable to support the police objection.”

Speaking at the council Licensing Board he pointed out how The Buf has undergone a “substantial” refurbishment worth £1.5 million.

Mr Dunlop said: “Other premises in Arthur Street have the benefit of a 2.30am opening in the town.”
The solicitor said the night spot is covered by 16 CCTV cameras, has created 30 new jobs and boasts a large dance floor.

Appealing to councillors he said: “My clients are simply asking for a level playing field here.”
Council leader Councillor Douglas Campbell proposed a visit to the Buf before voting on the application.
A decision is to be made at a later date following the visit.

The Buf, which opened on March 22, already operates a premises on Main Street Prestwick.
Firm Gobal Wine Distributors Ltd is behind the pub venture.

Arthur Street has been the site of a number of new night spots including Vinyl and Arthur Street Kitchen.

The street was formerly the home of Club De Mar, which operated for more than two decades.
