Pub could be barred from serving pints after secret lockdown drinks led to brawl

A pub will have its licence debated following reports that secret lockdown pints led to a street brawl.

Merseyside Police has applied for a review of The Wheatsheaf's operating conditions after officers were called to break up a fight outside.

The move means the Knotty Ash venue could be banned from serving pints just days after the lifting of pandemic restrictions allowing it to fully reopen.

Pub bosses will appear before Liverpool Council's licensing committee on Wednesday.

Ahead of the meeting Punch Pubs, which runs the venue, vowed to work with the authorities.

A note on the council's website explains: "The review of the licence for this premises is related to the licensing objectives of - the prevention of crime and disorder, public safety and public nuisance."

A Merseyside Police spokeswoman confirmed the review followed an incident in March.

A statement released to the ECHO said: "At 2.20am on Friday, March 12 we received an emergency call stating a group of males were fighting outside the pub.

"It was reported that males had smashed a window at the pub and then started fighting. It would appear that the disturbance started inside the premises and then spilled out onto the street.

"A man was seen to leave the pub and when questioned by police he said he had visited to drink with friends. He was issued with a Covid fine.

"Officers entered and found evidence that a number of people had been drinking inside the pub and a further fine was issued to the designated premises supervisor."

Councillors have a number of options available to them, including the suspension or complete removal of the pub's license to serve alcohol.

They could also modify the pub's operating conditions or remove the venue's designated premises supervisor.

The licensing hearing will come just days after the third step of England's lifting of lockdown measures - which include allowing pubs and restaurants to serve customers indoors for the first time this year.

Operations Director of Punch Pubs, Robin Belither, said: “As responsible landlords we take our licensing objectives and legal requirements very seriously.

"A breach of Covid regulations is no exception, and we have continued to work with and follow advice of the authorities, with the long term future of the pub and safety of the community in mind."
