Pub chain installs 'fever cameras' at Westfield site ahead of July reopening

A London pub chain has installed “fever cameras” at one of its busiest venues in advance of an eagerly anticipated reopening in early July.

Urban Pubs and Bar, which has 20 sites in the capital, will pilot the heat sensors at the Bat & Ball pub at the Westfield Stratford shopping centre.

The non-contact Foresight sensor, supplied by UK company Fevershields.com, can read a customer’s temperature to within 0.2C.

Drinkers arriving at the pub will have to have their temperature taken before they are allowed entry.

The temperature is displayed in seconds on a digital gauge on the device. When a reading over 37.6C is detected, the tripod or wall mounted camera makes an audible alert, flashing red hazard lights and registering the temperature on the front display.

If a customer arrives with a raised temperature because they have been cycling or exercising they will be given 10 minutes to cool down, then tested again. If the pilot is a success the system will be rolled out to other sites.
