Pub beer garden taped off after police called to report of sexual assault

Police taped off a pub beer garden following reports of a sexual assault in Bolton.

Officers were called to The Railway in Bromley Cross at around 7.30am this morning on Wednesday (June 16).

GMP say a sexual assault is believed to have happened nearby.

Crime scene investigators were called to the area and the Chapeltown Road pub was cordoned off.

Officers were also seen carrying out door-to-door enquiries.

Speaking to the Manchester Evening News , Mike Hales, owner of The Railway, said the pub had to close earlier today while police carried out checks.

He said the incident was isolated and not connected to the pub or its staff.

Mr Hales said: “It caused disruption from a business point of view but it is what it is.

“The incident was not connected to us or the staff, but it was an isolated incident that happened in our beer garden area.”

Neighbours living close to the pub described hearing a disturbance overnight.

One resident said: “I heard three lads’ voices and a girl screaming.

“I checked our cameras and I could see three lads walking away. I think it was about 1.30am.”

In a statement, GMP confirmed the victim is currently receiving specialist support.

In a statement, the force said: “Officers received a report at around 7.30am today (Wednesday 16 June 2021) of a sexual assault that is believed to have occurred near Chapeltown Road, Bromley Cross, Bolton.

“Enquiries are in their initial stages and the victim is currently receiving specialist support.

“There is not believed to be a wider risk to the public.”
