Pub becomes scene of crash for second time in a month - after young man lost life in horror smash

A Salford pub was the scene of a crash - for the second time in the space of a month.

On Tuesday two cars collided at the crossroads of Trinity Way and Blackfriars Road - with one careering into The Black Friar pub, on the edge of Manchester city centre.

The car destroyed barriers protecting pedestrians in the process.

It led to a man in his 40s being taken to hospital, a spokesperson for North West Ambulances said.

A Greater Manchester Police statement added: "Officers were called at around midday yesterday (17 August 2021) to a report of a collision involving two vehicles — a red Ford C-Max and a grey Honda CR-V — on Blackfriars Road, Salford.

"Enquiries established that the collision between the two vehicles resulted in the Honda CR-V colliding with a nearby building.

"Emergency services attended and one man was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

"Enquiries are ongoing and no arrests have been made."

Due to the emergency service presence at the scene, one lane of Trinity Way was closed for roughly 15 minutes.

Photos from the scene showed that the pub came away relatively damage-free.

The incident is the second time the pub, which only reopened in July after being shut for 20 years, has been hit.

Farakh Akhtar, 23, died in the horror crash in the early hours of Saturday, July 18.

The student, from Stretford, had just graduated from Manchester Metropolitan University with a 2:1 in Sports Management.

His older sister, Zahra, paid tribute to her brother, describing him as someone who ‘amazed’ her.

I'm such a proud sister, he made me feel so proud, people have said so much good about him," she said.

"He just amazed me. Over 2,000 people turned out for his funeral - people we didn't even know Farakh knew.

"Even an elderly neighbour popped round the other day to say how lovely my brother was, and how he would always wave at him.

"When I told him that Farakh had passed away he was really emotional."

Anyone with information on yesterday's incident should contact police online, if able, via www.gmp.police.uk or call 101 quoting incident 1097 of 17/08/2021.

Details can be passed anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
