A pub just an hour's drive away from Liverpool city centre has been named among the best in the UK for its Sunday lunch.
The roast dinner is a beloved tradition, with many venues claiming to serve the crème de la crème of the quintessentially British dish - though one Cheshire pub can proudly declare this to be true. The Cholmondeley Arms has been included in The Guardian's prestigious list of the UK's top 30 Sunday lunch venues.
Known locally as 'The Chum', it's based in an old schoolhouse which was converted into a pub in the 1980s, Cheshire Live reports. The venue is noted for its dedication to tradition, with the crest and motto of local nobility the Marquis of Cholmondeley 'cassis tutissima virtus' ('virtue is the safest helmet') displayed on the menu.
The popular pub focuses on locally sourced ingredients, and offers a decent selection of game dishes. Starters are varied, with pheasant goujons, seafood sharing platters, a pint of prawns and more available to choose from.
Vegetarians are catered for too, with a choice of field mushrooms and soups on offer, while meaty mains regularly include 28-day aged sirloin steak. It's served with traditional Yorkshire puddings, duck fat roasted potatoes and greens, all drowned in red wine gravy.
Retro comfort food dominates the dessert menu, with jam roly-poly, sticky toffee pudding, and black forest mess all up for grabs. There's also a roaring fire to cosy up near - ideal for relaxing in the colder autumn months.
The hearty menu serves as fuel for the famed Cholmondeley Arms pub walk. Those craving a few beverages after a wander in the countryside are spoilt for choice with a wide array of ales, as well as an impressive 366 range of gin.
