PSNI witness appeal after couple attacked by gang in South Belfast

Police are seeking witnesses to a gang attack on a couple in Belfast in the early hours of Sunday morning.

A woman aged 40 and her 39-year-old fiancé were assaulted in the Ravenhill area of the city as they walked home.

They reported having a disagreement with a man before a gang of five youths appeared on bikes.

PSNI Inspector James Ellson said: “At approximately 3am on Sunday 4th August, a 40-year-old female and 39-year-old male were assaulted by a group of men who are believed to be in their 20s.

“The female was treated by Northern Ireland Ambulance Service for her injuries which are not believed to be life threatening.

“We are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the assault, or who may have information which can assist with the investigation to contact detectives in Belfast on 101 quoting reference number 385 of 04/08/19.”

“Alternatively, information can also be provided to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 which is 100% anonymous and gives people the power to speak up and stop crime.”

The woman suffered injuries to he face head hands and arm in the incident.

She told Belfast Live: “A man walked up to us and said something I found derogatory and degrading and I told him what I thought of him. He then told my fiancé, ‘get your bitch under control’.

“There were words between all of us and then the man made a phone call and within minutes five young lads on bikes turned up.”

“I was pushed to the ground, the older man stood on my hands and beat me about the face. I fought back and screamed for him to get off me. My fiancé was also attacked.”
