PSNI warning as elderly residents in East Belfast targeted by scammers

Police have issued a warning as a number of elderly residents in East Belfast have been targeted by scammers.

On Thursday night, the PSNI said they received a high volume of calls over the past 24 hours reporting a particular phone scam.

The person claims to be 'Constable Magill from Strandtown Police Station Fraud Department'.

The public are being asked to tell their family members to look out for the scam.

A PSNI spokesperson said: "The name changes regularly but the message is always the same; requesting money and valuables otherwise an arrest/house search will be authorised.

"Elderly residents in the east of the city have been the target this time. Please note police will never ask for money/valuables and should you receive a telephone call of this nature, hang up immediately and contact police on 101.

"Pass this message on to family/friends/neighbours who may not have access to social media. Visit ScamwiseNI for more information."

The Scamwise NI website states: "Older, vulnerable people are particularly susceptible as well as those who are very trusting and easily persuaded to take a risk. A third of scam victims fall for a second scam within 12 months."
