PSNI say drink driver 'lucky to escape' with no injuries as they share horror crash image

Police have issued a stark warning about what can happen when you drink and drive.

Officers in Newry, Mourne and Down shared the image of a wrecked car on its side after a collision.

They confirmed that a woman has been arrested and would be interviewed by police on Sunday morning.

Sharing the shocking image, a spokesperson said: "The result of drinking and driving... The driver was lucky to escape with no injuries. She was arrested and will be interviewed this morning. Never ever drink and drive!"

The legal alcohol limit for drivers in Northern Ireland is:

  • 35 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath
  • 80 milligrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood
  • 107 milligrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of urine

According to figures released in October 2020 from PSNI,  2,992 people in Northern Ireland had been caught driving under the influence of either drink or drugs between September 1, 2019 and August 31, 2020.

Of those motorists detected, 583 were female and 2,408 were male. 32 of those individuals were aged under 18, whilst the majority were aged 30-49.
