PSNI respond to claims of "apparent firearm" at West Belfast funeral after images shared on social media

The PSNI have said they do not believe that claims that shots were fired at a funeral in West Belfast on Thursday are an "accurate description" of what took place after images were shared on social media.

The claims refer to an image posted of a funeral that took place outside St Peter's Cathedral on Divis Street on August 12.

Police have stated that no reports were received of any shots being fired at the time but that an "evident gathering operation" was in place at the time and this information will be reviewed in order to establish if any offences occurred.

Superintendent Gerard Pollock said: “Police are aware of an image on social media relating to a funeral that took place in West Belfast today (Thursday 12th August) involving an apparent firearm.

“Based on the information available to police at this time, including the observations of officers deployed in the immediate vicinity, and the fact that no reports were received of any shots having been fired, police do not believe this image or the accompanying text to be an accurate description of what took place today.

“However, an evidence gathering operation was in place, and police will now review this to establish if any offences occurred. If any offences are detected, a police investigation will be carried out.”
