PSNI probe link between four street robberies in Belfast in 1 hour

Detectives are investigating a link between four street robberies in Belfast in the space of an hour last night.

Police were alerted to four incidents which happened between 10.30pm and 11.23pm on Wednesday night, May 15, in the city centre .

In the first incident, a man using a mobility scooter was approached by two men near the Grosvenor Road , they asked for cigarettes before attacking him and making off empty handed at around 10.30pm.

Then at 10.34pm a woman reported that a man on a black bicycle stole her mobile phone on Great Victoria Street .

After that, at 10.47pm, police received another report, this time from a man who had been walking along Great Victoria Street , who had his wallet and phone stolen by a man who ran off in the direction of City Hall.

In the final incident, police received a call reporting a woman had her phone stolen in Ann Street at 11.23pm by a man dressed in a grey tracksuit, riding a bicycle.

A 30-year-old man has been arrested.

Inspector David Gibson said: "Thanks to the description provided, CCTV operators guided police officers to a male matching the description nearby. The male was stopped and searched by police who recovered four mobile phones and a small quantity of class C drugs, subsequently arresting the male on suspicion of theft, assault and possession of class C Drugs.

"He is currently helping with our ongoing enquiries.

"While we believe that each of these incidents may be linked, I am appealing to anyone with information or anyone who may have witnessed any of these incidents to contact us on 101, quoting reference number 1489 15/05/19.

"Alternatively, information can also be provided to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 which is 100% anonymous and gives people the power to speak up and stop crime."
