PSNI praises North Belfast youngsters after incident with elderly woman

The PSNI has praised a group of young boys in North Belfast after they came to the aid of an elderly woman.

The group of seven boys called the police on Saturday when they spotted the lady in a vulnerable situation, and stayed with her until officers arrived.

“To the parents of the Shore road young boys who called us earlier due to their concern for an elderly lady - you should be so proud of your children,” PSNI North Belfast said via its Facebook page.

“Not only did they ring police when they saw and realised that this elderly and vulnerable lady was in need of help - but they waited with her until we arrived to ensure she was ok.

“So often we hear reports of youths up to no good but tonight was quite the opposite. These young lads were absolutely brilliant.

“We just wanted to thank them for looking out for someone they didn't even know and also, having the good sense to phone us to get this lady help.”

One of the boys’ mothers told Belfast Live the lads had found the woman “crying and in distress” before alerting the PSNI.

Lilia McKee, mum of 12-year-old Ryan, said: “They phoned the police and reassured her she will be OK and she was safe with them."

Ryan and his friends, pupils at Hazelwood Integrated College and Belfast Boys Model School, said they "knew something was wrong" when they encountered the woman.

"We all need to work together to protect the most vulnerable in society and tonight was a perfect example of that," the PSNI added.
