PSNI praise motorists for alerting them to suspected drink drivers and taking them 'off the roads'

Police officers have issued a fresh warning over the dangers of drink driving following a number of incidents in Co Down.

It comes after the PSNI were alerted to a potential driver under the influence by a fellow motorist.

The incident was reported on the A2 on Wednesday and led to the suspected driver being intercepted and arrested.

In a post on social media, police in Ards and North Down said this "could well have prevented another death on our roads".

They also revealed that incident led to two further calls from members of the public and another two arrests.

A PSNI spokesperson said: "Great bit of work by a motorist yesterday afternoon on the busy A2 who spotted a potential driver under the influence. Able to give a good description of the car and manner of driving backed up by dash cam footage.

"Officers were able to intercept the car and quickly make an arrest for driving whilst unfit through drink or drugs and other offences. The driver remains in police custody and will be interviewed this morning.

"The A2 is one of our busiest roads and the caller could well have prevented another death on our roads. Our thanks to them for reporting to us so promptly and getting this driver off the road."

A short time later, police issued a further update of more incidents, posting: "Whilst not having that post about arrested driver up that long in the last 30 mins there have been two more identical calls and two drivers on their way to custody.

"Just shows the power of having so many sets of eyes and people willing to call will take these drivers off the roads. Great work again by those involved.

"Also just goes to show that drink driving isn’t something that necessarily happens after dark and can happen at anytime of the day."
