PSNI officers to go 'undercover' to catch drivers not giving cyclists enough space when overtaking

Police in Northern Ireland are set to go 'undercover' in a bid to teach motorists about the dangers of driving too close to cyclists.

PSNI officers will swap their uniforms for lycra and squad cars for bikes as part of Operation Close Pass.

Their bikes will be fitted with cameras as they cycle on roads to identify drivers who are too close for comfort.

Motorists will then be pulled over further along the road by police colleagues and spoken to about their driving.

The initiative sees the plain-clothes police officers cycling with a camera on their handlebars and another on the back of their bike.

However, the PSNI said the focus would very much be on engagement and education rather than enforcement.

Assistant Chief Constable Alan Todd, who himself will take part, said the operation was originally set out to address "poor driver behaviour".

He said: "When the cyclist is passed too closely, the driver is stopped and given advice.

"The police cyclist will be fitted with cameras which will allow the driver to view the overtake from a cyclist’s perspective.

"In the coming weeks, we will be taking Operation Close Pass; into communities across Northern Ireland in order to spread this vital road safety message.

"However, if required enforcement action can and will be taken in really bad cases.

"To coincide with this week we want to promote the fact the road network is for everyone to share; whether you are riding a pedal cycle, travelling in a car, lorry, bus or van or walking to your destination.

"We will be putting messaging out across our page this week to reflect this.

"Everyone has a responsibility to ensure their own safety and the safety of others by exercising patience and courtesy we can all make the roads a safer place."
