PSNI officers open suitcase to find 9kgs of suspected cannabis

Police officers who spotted a man struggling with a suitcase found 9kgs of suspected cannabis when it was opened, they said today.

The alleged incident occurred in the Lisburn Road area of South Belfast earlier today(Thursday).

The PSNI says a 27-year-old man has been arrested by officers from the Belfast District Support Team “on suspicion of a number of offences”.

Inspector James Murphy added: “Just after 10:30am, officers noticed a male who was struggling to pull a brand new suitcase along the pavement. The officers stopped to speak with the man, who produced a number of identity documents under a number of aliases.

"On further enquiry, approximately 9kg of suspected herbal cannabis worth an estimated £90,000 was located in the suitcase and seized.

“The male has been arrested on suspicion of a number of offences and is currently helping with further enquiries. This arrest and seizure is further evidence of our ongoing commitment to removing and disrupting the illegal supply of drugs in the Belfast area.

“Drugs do nothing but bring misery to individuals, their families and the wider community, so I would again appeal to anyone who knows anything about illegal drugs or drug dealing in their area to contact police on the non-emergency number 101.”

The police added that potential witnesses can also call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
