PSNI launch investigation amid claims officer left gun in hotel

An investigation has been launched after a police officer left his gun in a hotel, it is being reported.

The firearm is understood to have been left on the premises, in Newcastle, Co Down after the officer spent some time there.

The PSNI has not released many details of the incident, only saying a “suspected firearm was recovered from premises on South Promenade in Newcastle on Monday 30th August”.

They added: “Enquiries are continuing in relation to this incident.”

They have not officially confirmed that the gun belonged to a serving officer. The Belfast Telegraph is reporting, however, that the PSNI officer was on holiday in the seaside town when the incident occurred.

He is believed to have left the weapon in his hotel room, it is reported, and that the firearm was found in the room by hotel staff after the officer left.

It is further reported that the incident is being investigated by the PSNI’s Professional Standards Department. The gun is understood to be a personal protection weapon.
