PSNI issue stark warning after 'youths fall ill inhaling substance from vape type device'

A number of young people are reported to have fallen ill after 'inhaling a substance from a vape type device'.

Police say they are currently investigating multiple similar reports in Ballyclare, Antrim and Newry.

In a warning on the Police Antrim and Newtownabbey Facebook page on Tuesday, officers said there may be potential unreported incidents of a similar nature in other areas.

A statement read: "Police are currently investigating reports in Ballyclare, Antrim and Newry of young people becoming ill after inhaling a substance from a vape type device.

"There are potentially unreported incidents in other areas therefore we are working with our partners in Public Health to alert parents, guardians and young people.

"We would urge anyone using vape devices to only use liquids obtained from reputable sources.

"People under 18 years of age should not be using these devices as their sale is prohibited to anyone under 18."

Meanwhile, the PSNI are appealing for information following an alleged altercation in Belfast city centre on Monday.

The reported incident at Castle Place took place at around 5.50pm after a security staff member asked a customer to leave the premises, the PSNI says.

A PSNI spokesperson told Belfast Live: "A man aged in his 20’s was arrested following the incident, then subsequently released on bail, and remains in hospital on Tuesday receiving treatment for a head injury.

"Further enquiries are being conducted into the matter and officers would ask anyone with any information which could assist them to contact police at Lisburn Road on 101 quoting reference number 1460 23/11/20."
