PSNI issue advice for public hoping to see President Joe Biden on his visit to Belfast

The PSNI has issued advice to the public who are travelling to Belfast city centre to catch a glimpse of US President Joe Biden on Wednesday.

The President of the United States arrived in Northern Ireland for the first stop of his four-day tour of the island of Ireland on Tuesday night.

His visit, which coincides with the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement, will see him give a key address at Ulster University's new Belfast campus later today.

With traffic disruption and delays expect during the duration of his visit to Belfast, police have shared information on those wishing to watch the President's motorcade on Wednesday.

A spokesperson for the PSNI said: "Those attending the event [at Ulster University] or those wishing to watch the motorcade should make sensible provisions for parking, walking to the venue or attending designated viewing areas."

Road closures have been in place across the city since Monday night to prepare for the presidential visit.

They include:

  • York Street
  • Donegal Street
  • Academy Street
  • Fredrick Street
  • James Street
  • Franklin Street
  • Bedford Street
  • Clarence Street West

On Monday, Translink advised that President Biden's visit may impact their services in the Belfast city centre area.

A spokesperson for Translink said: “Due to the US Presidential visit, passengers are advised to expect some service disruption, diversions and delays in and around Belfast City Centre on Tuesday 11th and Wednesday 12th April 2023.

“Customers should leave extra time for their journeys and follow the latest travel advice on social media @Translink_NI, visit www.translink.co.uk/service-updates or call 028 90 66 66 30.

“We would like to thank our customers for their patience during this period.”
