PSNI investigating after teenager's body found in Twinbrook

Police in West Belfast are “investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a male teenager”.

In a brief statement, they added that a 19-year-old male has been arrested “as part of the investigation”.

Detective Inspector Miskelly said: “I can confirm that the body of a male teenager has been recovered from a river in Twinbrook, West Belfast during the early hours of today, Saturday 2nd January.”

The police added that there “are no further details at present”.

It is understood that while no formal identification has been made, the family of teenager Conor Kerr, who was reported missing on New Year’s Day, has been informed.

Sinn Féin MLA Órlathí Flynn offered her condolences following the discovery.

The West Belfast MLA added: “The discovery of a man’s body in the Colin area of the city is a shock to the local community. The police investigation into the incident is underway and must be allowed to continue.

“My sympathies are with the family and friends of this man at this time. Anyone with information on the incident should bring it forward to the PSNI.”

Stephen Maginnes, a Sinn Fein councillor in the area, asked that any young people who were with Conor Kerr yesterday come forward to help police with their investigation.

He said: “It is important the police know every detail of his movements yesterday.”
