PSNI hit out after 'gentle giant' dog dies from poisoning

A dog has died and another seriously ill after being poisoned in Co Tyrone.

PSNI Dungannon posted an appeal on their Facebook page on Friday and described the incident as a "malicious attack" on a rescue centre.

They said: "Sickening to have to report this, a dog has died and another has been very ill after they were poisoned in Dungannon.

"At present we are investigating what we believe to be a malicious attack on the Tyrone Husky Rescue Centre.

"Junior (pictured) was poisoned and died soon after despite best efforts to save him. He was a much loved gentle giant who will be sorely missed.

"Another dog Tuatha is still recovering after being poisoned around two weeks ago.

"We want to catch whoever this was. If you have any info on who was involved please drop us a PM or call 101. The reference number is 1648 of 18/02/20."

Speaking to Belfast Live on Friday, owner of Tyrone Husky Rescue said she is "just completely devastated."

Hayley said: "We couldn't get the right home for Junior so after about six months I just said he wasn't going anywhere and we kept him. I fell in love with him - and I am just heartbroken.

"It's such a privilege when a dog has had a bad start, for them to love you and trust you, so he was a rescue resident in our home. I just don't know why anyone would hurt a dog, or any animal.

"No animal no matter what, deserves that. Our rescue is only up and running a few years and we have rehomed over 200 dogs. It's a one woman show and my place is completely secure for keeping dogs in but I never thought that I would have to worry about keeping people out."
