PSNI fines for breaching Covid-19 restrictions handed out to almost 1,600 people

Nearly 1,600 fines have been handed out to people for breaching Covid-19 restrictions.

From March to Monday, October 26, police handed out 1,598 fines for breaches of the restrictions, with the majority of these taking place in Belfast.

A police breakdown of figures also shows that 1,075 community resolution notices have been issued, 400 prohibition notices and 45 £1,000 fines for failure to isolate.

Who had the most fines by council district?

  • Belfast City - 798

  • Derry and Strabane - 302

  • Newry, Mounre and Down - 120

  • Fermanagh and Omagh - 74

  • Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon - 97

  • Mid and East Antrim - 55

  • Antrim and Newtownabbey - 43

  • Lisburn and Castlereagh - 24

  • Ards and North Down - 33

  • Mid Ulster - 34

  • Causeway Coast and Glens - 18

Of the 1,075 CRNs that have been given out, the majority have been in Belfast, with 324, followed by Derry City and Strabane with 154.

Belfast and Ards and North Down have seen the most people fined £1,000, with nine people failing to isolate in each area.

319 commercial premises have been given a prohibition notice for breaching restrictions and 81 private ones.

Current enforcement penalties in place include:

  • £60 fixed penalty notice for breaching Covid-19 regulations - £30 if paid in 14 days
  • Fines for subsequent offences can double each time to a max of £960 if people continuously flout the rules
  • £1,000 fine for breaching Covid-19 travel rules, such as failing to quarantine on return from listed countries
  • Fine up to £5,000 if a person is convicted at court
