PSNI at scene after man is reportedly shot in West Belfast

PSNI are currently at the scene of a shooting in West Belfast on Thursday night.

It is understood that a man has been taken to Royal Victoria Hospital after reportedly being shot before 9pm on December 3.

West Belfast SDLP representative, Paul Doherty said there was a heavy police presence in the Downfine Drive area and that they had it cordoned off.

"Residents in the area heard what sounded like two gunshots," he told Belfast Live.

"I have since been in contact with the police on the ground and they have told me that a man has in fact been shot.

"The area is currently cordoned off, there is a helicopter up and residents are currently out in the streets. They are quite disturbed by what has happened here tonight.

"It has taken everybody by surprised and quite a few in the area have been left in shock."

The SDLP representative added: "It's a quiet area but unfortunately these sort of events have transpired previously.

"The message is clear to these groups. They need to get off this community's back and go away. These sort of acts should never be dealt with in this manner, it's totally unacceptable and shows a total lack of respect for the local area.

"I will remain here with residents to keep them updated throughout the night. They are disgusted by these sorts of actions."

Belfast Live have contacted the PSNI for a comment.
