Psion reaches deal with Motorola

Palmtop computer group Psion said yesterday it would develop mobile devices with US mobile-phone maker Motorola to be launched in the first half of next year.

The deal immediately sent shares in Psion on an upward path against the background of a falling market.

"The intention is to put the Internet in the user's pocket," Psion chief executive David Levin said. "This will be full web browsing as we understand it."

Remote access at present requires a laptop computer linked to mobile phone at best, while some phones deliver a basic version of the internet.

Mr Levin predicted the new format being developed with Motorola would quickly become a major global mass market.

"In a number of years everybody will have a pocket internet terminal. Inasmuch as the PC has spread and then the mobile phone has spread, so the pocket internet terminal will go the same way," he said.

The deal with Motorola came 20 days after Psion unveiled an internet partnership with Vodafone AirTouch, which Mr Levin said concerned a different part of the food chain.
