PSG vs Tottenham live: Spurs suffer penalties heartbreak after blowing two-goal lead in Super Cup

Tottenham blew a two-goal lead before suffering heartbreak on penalties as Champions League holders Paris Saint-Germain fought back to win the Uefa Super Cup.

PSG only returned for pre-season a week ago and have shown signs of rust, barely able to threaten Guglielmo Vicario’s goal despite boasting much of the ball in the first half. Europa League winners Spurs, meanwhile, threatened the most and snatched a deserving lead as half-time neared, with Micky van de Ven firing in the rebound after new PSG keeper Lucas Chevalier saved Joao Palhinha’s effort onto the bar.

It could’ve been two before the break as Mohammed Kudus nodded onto the post, but Crisitan Romero made no mistake just minutes after the restart, heading home to announce himself as the club’s new captain.

Spurs maintained their two-goal cushion Kang-in Lee’s 85th-minute strike instilled late hope into PSG, before Goncalo Ramos’ stoppage time equaliser forced penalties. And after Van de Ven and Mathys Tel missed from the spot, Nuno Mendes smashed into the roof of the net to seal victory for the Parisians and deny new boss Thomas Frank an immediate piece of silverware.

Next up for Spurs

00:00 , Will Castle

Spurs won’t have long to pick themselves up as they face Burnley in their Premier League opener on Saturday.

Kick-off at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium will be at 3pm, and if they perform anything like they did tonight, the Clarets will have a real test on their hands in their first match back in the top-flight.

Gianluigi Donnarumma who?

Lucas Chevalier certainly redeemed himself for letting Cristian Romero’s header through too easily.

The new PSG stopper is the shootout hero, perhaps vindicating Luis Enrique for exiling last season’s top performer Gianluigi Donnarumma from the squad.

'We'll be flying out on Saturday'

“It’s a short turnaround and there’ll be a bit of disappointment for the next 24 hours,” Frank told TNT Sports.

“Then when I wake up tomorrow, we’ll be ready tomorrow afternoon, then more ready on Friday. We’ll make sure we’re flying out on Saturday.”

Thomas Frank reiterates desire for signings but stays tight-lipped on specifics

22:59 , Will Castle

“I’d like to strengthen the squad, no doubt about that,” Frank told TNT Sports. “We will work very hard to do that. In general I’m happy with the squad but we would like to make the squad stronger before the window closes.”

'We showed we can play against any team in the world'

22:58 , Will Castle

“In one game we showed that we can play against any team in the world,” Frank told TNT Sports. “I’m not in doubt that we can do that. That’s a positive I’ll take away from this.”

Thomas Frank emphasises importance of set plays

22:56 , Will Castle

“It’s key,” Frank told TNT Sports. “For any team it should be a weapon in my opinion. We definitely will focus on it because we think it’s a key area.”

Tottenham scored both their goals from deep free-kicks tonight.

Thomas Frank only taking the positives

22:53 , Will Castle

“We played a very good game against one of the best team in the world, maybe the best and we had them exactly where we wanted for 80-something minutes until the 2-1 goal, which shifted a bit of momentum,” Frank told TNT Sports.

“So much positives, so proud of the team, the fans, the players. There’s a lot to be happy with, but it’s a flip of a coin in a penalty shootout.”

Report: Tottenham squander late two-goal lead before Super Cup shoot-out defeat to PSG

22:44 , Will Castle

Tottenham let slip a late two-goal lead before suffering shoot-out pain in Thomas Frank’s first match in charge to lose a thrilling Super Cup final against Paris Saint-Germain.

Set-piece goals by Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero had Spurs halfway towards another trophy – only three months on from Frank’s predecessor Ange Postecoglou clinching Europa League success in May.

Champions League winners PSG, who only returned to pre-season last week following their Club World Cup exploits in July, produced a stirring response with Kang-in Lee pulling one back with five minutes left.

Substitute Goncalo Ramos forced spot-kicks when he headed home in the fourth-minute of stoppage-time to stun the north London club.

It was initially advantage Tottenham in the shoot-out when Vitinha missed PSG’s first kick but it was followed by Van de Ven and Mathys Tel failing to score their penalties as Luis Enrique’s men triumphed 4-3 on spot-kicks despite a fine display on Frank’s competitive debut.

PSG lift the Super Cup

22:28 , Will Castle

PSG are getting used to lifting European silverware, aren’t they?

Marquinhos holds aloft the Super Cup as the Parisians become the first ever French side to win the trophy.

Goncalo Ramos, who got the late equaliser, and shootout hero Lucas Chavelier also get in on the action.

Meanwhile, heartbroken Spurs players are forced to watch on...

So close for Spurs

22:24 , Will Castle

Tottenham ended their 17-year wait for silverware back in May - a couple more minutes and they would’ve added to their collection tonight, just 12 weeks on from Bilbao.

For 85 minutes, they were deserving victors, but they were undone by the potency of PSG, who took until the dying stages to get into the move.

Nevertheless, that performance can be taken as an incredibly encouraging sign of things to come under Thomas Frank.

For now, though, they are given their runners-up medals and walk past the Super Cup, to be lifted by PSG.

Saying that, PSG are feeling themselves now...

GOAL! PSG 2-2 Tottenham (Ramos 90+4')

21:53 , Will Castle

AT THE DEATH, PSG EQUALISE!

It’s a tremendous cross from Dembele, who slips away from Spence and whips it onto the head of Ramos.

The Portuguese makes no mistake and nods into the net, with Vicario having no chance.

Heartbreak for Spurs.

PSG 1-2 Tottenham

21:52 , Will Castle

90+3 mins: PSG trying to work a late opportunity. EVERYBODY back for Tottenham.

PSG 1-2 Tottenham

21:51 , Will Castle

90 mins: Mbaye goes down under the challenge of Danso but hits the deck far too easily.

Dembele is booked for remonstrating with the ref.

Spurs make another change as Sarr comes off for Bergvall, before the fourth official reveals there will be five - no, SIX minutes of added time.

Bit of indecision on the touchline there.

PSG 1-2 Tottenham

21:49 , Will Castle

89 mins: Huge headed block by Romero to flick Nuno Mendes’ long-range effort over the bar.

That was travelling and would’ve been very interesting had it reached Vicario’s goal.

PSG 1-2 Tottenham

21:48 , Will Castle

88 mins: PSG have been the better team for the past 15 minutes - a goal was coming.

Now Spurs can’t get out. All eyes on the fourth official to see how much stoppage time will be added.

GOAL! PSG 1-2 Tottenham (Lee, 85')

21:45 , Will Castle

Now the nerves will set in.

It’s a wonderful strike by Kang-in Lee, who fires into the far corner from the edge of the box.

Late belief for PSG, and five minutes to hold on for Spurs.

PSG 0-2 Tottenham

21:43 , Will Castle

82 mins: That was a big moment. Tel concedes a sloppy free-kick on the edge of the box as he bundles into his man.

Lee can only fire into the wall, however, with Pedro Porro taking the brunt of the effort.

PSG 0-2 Tottenham

21:40 , Will Castle

80 mins: Another change for Spurs as Kudus makes way for Tel. Fresh legs to try and see this one out.

Moments later, Vitinha goes for the spectacular from range and blazes into the crowd. A sign of just how frustrated PSG have been made tonight.

PSG 0-2 Tottenham

21:37 , Will Castle

77 mins: Desire Doue’s night is done as Goncalo Ramos enters the fray in his place.

Another dangerman completely neutralised by Spurs tonight.

PSG 0-2 Tottenham

21:37 , Will Castle

75 mins: Just 15 minutes for Spurs to hold on.

A two-goal lead may seem comfortable, but we know how quickly PSG can do damage when it matters - just ask Inter Milan...

PSG 0-2 Tottenham

21:32 , Will Castle

72 mins: Double change for Spurs as both teams go for a water break.

Palhinha and Richarlison come off as Gray and Solanke enter the fray.

PSG 0-2 Tottenham

21:31 , Will Castle

71 mins: CHANCE! Dembele receives the ball in space just inside the box but can’t get his shot right, firing well wide first time.

PSG 0-2 Tottenham

21:30 , Will Castle

70 mins: Not a bad ball from Doue that flashes in front of Dembele and into the grateful arms of Vicario.

PSG finally beginning to put a bit of pressure on the Spurs box.

PSG 0-2 Tottenham

21:29 , Will Castle

68 mins: Double change for PSG as Barcola and Zaire-Emery make way for Mbaye and Lee.

A goal disallowed and hooked - not a great minute for Barcola.

NO GOAL! PSG 0-2 Tottenham

21:27 , Will Castle

66 mins: Barcola puts the ball in the net after pinball in the Tottenham box, but the flag goes up against Fabian Ruiz.

Replays show the Spaniard was indeed offside in the build-up.

PSG 0-2 Tottenham

21:25 , Will Castle

64 mins: CHANCE! Hakimi tries to catch out Spurs’ back four with a run from deep, with Vitinha picking him out the Moroccan in space in the box after breaking the line.

Instead of shooting, Hakimi touches it back to Doue, who can’t get an effort away as Tottenham bodies recover to block. That should’ve ended up in the net.

The flag then goes up - it was tight - but that was indicative of PSG’s entire evening.

PSG 0-2 Tottenham

21:22 , Will Castle

62 mins: Silly booking from Danso, who kicks the ball away to prevent a quick throw in PSG’s own half.

60 mins: Frustrating night for Kvaratskhelia comes to an end as Luis Enrique brings on Fabian Ruiz for the Georgian.

PSG 0-2 Tottenham

21:18 , Will Castle

58 mins: Sloppy again from PSG as Sarr bursts past Pacho, who is forced to put both hands around his waist and bring him down. He’s also booked.

Free-kick from 25 yards out for Porro - it’s not a bad effort but it has just too much whip and goes wide, albeit off Doue’s head.

PSG 0-2 Tottenham

21:16 , Will Castle

55 mins: Referee is getting a bit card happy as he dishes out a booking to Richarlison for mouthing off, before cautioning Barcola for a late challenge.

Time for cool heads, Spurs.

PSG 0-2 Tottenham

21:14 , Will Castle

52 mins: PSG just haven’t got going tonight. The fact they only returned to training a week ago has been blatantly obvious.

GOAL! PSG 0-2 Tottenham (Romero, 48')

21:10 , Will Castle

What a way to announce yourself as Tottenham’s new skipper!

It’s a deep free-kick and PSG defend the delivery really poorly, with Romero in acres of space.

The Argentinian rises and heads towards the far corner, an effort that Chevalier should deal with better as he gets both palms to it. But the ball goes through his gloves and into the side-netting!

Tottenham lead by two, and PSG have a mountain to climb.

PSG 0-1 Tottenham

21:07 , Will Castle

47 mins: SAVE! Sloppy from Doue around his own penalty area as Richarlison gets it in the box, shooting sharply and forcing a routine stop from Chevalier.

Not the first time PSG have been dispossessed in a dangerous area tonight.

BACK UNDERWAY! PSG 0-1 Tottenham

21:05 , Will Castle

We’re off again in Udine!

No changes from either manager at the break.

HALF-TIME! PSG 0-1 Tottenham

HALF-TIME! PSG 0-1 Tottenham

20:49 , Will Castle

And that’s half-time!

Tottenham have burst into a shock lead against Champions League holders Paris Saint-Germain as the two European champions clash in the Uefa Super Cup.

PSG only returned for pre-season a week ago and have shown signs of rust, barely able to threaten Guglielmo Vicario’s goal despite boasting much of the ball.

Europa League winners Spurs, meanwhile, have threatened the most and snatched a deserving lead as half-time neared, with Micky van de Ven firing in the rebound after new PSG keeper Lucas Chevalier saved Joao Palhinha’s effort onto the bar.

It could’ve been two before the break as Mohammed Kudus nodded onto the post, but Spurs now face the challenge of holding onto their advantage as they look to add another piece of silverware to their trophy cabinet.

PSG 0-1 Tottenham

20:48 , Will Castle

45 mins: OFF THE POST! So nearly two for Tottenham!

Richarlison nods a dropping ball towards the goal, with Kudus flicking it on and hitting the woodwork!

This has been some first half for new boss Thomas Frank.

PSG 0-1 Tottenham

20:45 , Will Castle

41 mins: Van de Ven produced game-saving heroics in the Europa League final with that incredible goal-line clearance - has he just put Spurs on course for even more silverware?

(Getty Images)

GOAL! PSG 0-1 Tottenham (Van de Ven, 39')

20:42 , Will Castle

SPURS LEAD IN THE SUPER CUP, AND IT’S NOTHING LESS THAN THEY DESERVE!

It’s a long free-kick from Vicario, with Romero meeting it to loop a header into the danger zone.

Palhinha latches onto the ball and volleys goalwards, which is brilliantly saved by Chevalier onto the bar - but Van de Ven is there to tap in the rebound!

PSG 0-0 Tottenham

20:40 , Will Castle

36 mins: Half-chance for PSG as a pull-back from the byline propels back towards Ousmane Dembele, but the Frenchman snatches at it and side-foots over.

PSG 0-0 Tottenham

20:35 , Will Castle

33 mins: More sloppy PSG play allows Spurs to counter, who utilise switch and find Djed Spence, who has been frustrated by his lack of service down the left so far.

He does well to get past his man but the pull-back is cut out.

PSG fail to clear properly, with Kudus then firing a dangerous shot goalwards which is well blocked. That was travelling.

PSG 0-0 Tottenham

20:32 , Will Castle

29 mins: PSG have largely been quelled in this first half, but they threatened to do damage there.

Barcola is set free down the left but as he breaks into the box, Danso puts in an important challenge to force a corner.

The resulting delivery flies over everyone and the chance goes.

PSG 0-0 Tottenham

20:27 , Will Castle

24 mins: SAVE! Brilliant stop from new boy Chevalier!

PSG are dispossessed far too easily on halfway, with Kudus picking the ball up and slipping Richarlison through.

The Brazilian shows the confidence to shoot early, with his effort slightly deflected to loop dangerous towards Chevalier’s goal.

The Frenchman is equal to it as he parries over.

PSG 0-0 Tottenham

20:22 , Will Castle

19 mins: Set piece chance for Tottenham as Porro stands over the free-kick.

The Spaniard whips in an inviting cross but, under pressure from Pacho, the resulting header goes over.

PSG 0-0 Tottenham

20:19 , Will Castle

17 mins: PSG’s dangermen have started quietly so far. Spurs will hope it stays like that.

PSG 0-0 Tottenham

20:14 , Will Castle

12 mins: Good work from Kudus to dispossess Mendes and try and get Tottenham going.

A deep cross is well kept in by Richarlison - but the following action leads the move to go dead as the Brazilian balloons out his delivery for a throw.

PSG 0-0 Tottenham

20:11 , Will Castle

9 mins: CHANCE! First time we’ve seen PSG get going.

Great football as Zaire-Emery and Doue link up before feeding it to Kvaratskhelia in the box.

The Georgian is off balance and fires his effort on the spin wide.

PSG 0-0 Tottenham

20:09 , Will Castle

7 mins: A reminder that PSG ended their 2024/25 season just 33 days ago - meaning they’ve only just returned to pre-season.

Can Spurs catch the formidable European champions while they’re rusty?

PSG 0-0 Tottenham

20:07 , Will Castle

4 mins: Kevin Danso gets the first chance to launch a throw in towards the area - there are half-hearted appeals for a penalty but the Parisians clear.

KICK-OFF! PSG 0-0 Tottenham

Tottenham have hope under Thomas Frank and the priority is now clear

19:45 , Ben McAleer

“He understands Rome wasn't built in a day. We haven't said to him that we want to win the Premier League this year,” Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy said on The Overlap with Gary Neville last week. He’d be wise to take on his own advice. Spurs head into another season with a new manager at the helm as Thomas Frank succeeds Ange Postecoglou at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium helm.

That’s not to say Postecoglou deserved a third season. It was a series that had run its course with a grand crescendo. Europa League success, while welcomed with open arms in north London, papered over a dire domestic campaign. Spurs, after all, lost 22 league games last season. It was the most by a team that was not relegated in a 38-game Premier League campaign.

Emotionally, for supporters, it was sad to see Postecoglou go. He was a father figure who routinely went to bat for the club. However, it was impossible to overlook the tactical shortcomings. Remove the rose-tinted glasses, and the stats outlined a team that lacked structure and was routinely carved open in transition. Ange’s gung-ho approach may have appealed to neutrals and rivals, who loved nothing more than watching Spurs crash and burn on a weekly basis.

19:30 , Will Castle

The new season of the English top flight is fast approaching, and with that will come the long-awaited return of Fantasy Premier League.

As pre-season gives us a glimpse of potential top performers, many players will have already picked their squads for the opening gameweek of the 2025/26 campaign, though even at this stage, new signings and potential injuries might change things.

The usual suspects - your Erling Haalands and Mo Salahs of the world - will be among the most popular picks, with history dictating their unwavering ability to rack up points.

However, there are plenty of other players across the Premier League who might offer genuine value this season, from breakout stars to marquee new arrivals, with the potential of setting your team apart from the rest in your mini-league.

Here are 30 players we think might be solid additions to your FPL side:

Tottenham make shock move for Manchester City’s Savinho

19:23 , Richard Jolly

Tottenham have made a surprise move for Savinho but Manchester City are not interested in selling the winger.

Talks have taken place between the Europa League winners and the former Premier League champions but City want to keep the 21-year-old.

City also believe Savinho is worth much more than a mooted price of €50m after his encouraging first year at the Etihad Stadium.

Pep Guardiola tends to let players leave if they want to go – and Savinho is yet to say he does – and if City’s asking price is met and they have time to find a replacement, if one is needed.

Gianluigi Donnarumma’s agent Enzo Railo has launched a tirade against Paris Saint-Germain and the club’s treatment of the goalkeeper.

“We are shocked by PSG,” Raiola said. “There’s zero respect by the club after four years together. We will consider the situation also with our legal team. We will consider solutions now, maybe in Premier League there will be clubs able to pay what’s needed.

“Paris Saint-Germain are asking for big money. They talk about respect, but it’s only about the money.”

Son Heung-min makes frank admission over record-breaking MLS move

19:07 , Will Castle

Son Heung-min completed a record-breaking transfer to Los Angeles FC as he bid farewell to Tottenham, but admitted the Major League Soccer club was not his initial preferred destination despite their successful persuasion.

“They’ve been absolutely working so hard to get me here to join LAFC,” Son said.

“If I’m honest it was not my first choice but John (Thorrington, LAFC general manager) was the first call when the season finished and John changed my mind, he changed my heart.

“I’m so happy to see all the Korean fans, I was at the game and I saw you supporting like crazy and I wanted to run on the pitch and show my performance. I’m here to win and I will perform.

“I will definitely show you something exciting in… are we calling it football or soccer? I will definitely show you some exciting football and we will have success.”

Tottenham’s Yves Bissouma dropped by Thomas Frank for Super Cup due to persistent lateness

19:00 , Will Castle

Wondering where Yves Bissouma is tonight?

Well, the midfielder was left out of Tottenham’s Super Cup squad entirely for disciplinary reasons.

Bissouma has been left at home after being late “several times” this summer.

It is an unhelpful distraction to Thomas Frank’s attempt to mark his debut with silverware.

Tottenham confirm Cristian Romero as new club captain after Son Heung Min’s departure

18:30 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Cristian Romero has been appointed as the new captain of Tottenham Hotspur after Son Heung Min’s departure.

Son led Spurs to their first trophy in 17 years with victory in the Europa League at the end of last season, but has now departed the club after a decade in London to join LAFC.

Centre-back Romero had been the subject of speculation over a possible move away early in the window yet has remained, and has been installed as Son’s replacement by Thomas Frank.

Tottenham ready to beat Arsenal and sign Eberechi Eze after opportunity emerges

18:20 , Miguel Delaney

Tottenham Hotspur are aiming to seize a window of opportunity to beat Arsenal to the signing of Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze, by putting together an acceptable package for Crystal Palace this week.

As reported in the Independent's 'Inside Football' newsletter on Friday, Spurs have ramped up interest in the 27-year-old after the injury to James Maddison, amid a widespread belief that the saga might finally come to a head by the start of the Premier League season. That would coincide with the expiration of Eze's release clause for this window.

Arsenal have long been interested in Eze, and are viewed as the Crystal Palace player's first preference, but the fact that no proper transfer bid has yet materialised means there is a chance for Spurs to move forward.

James Maddison undergoes surgery

18:10 , Will Castle

Tottenham midfielder James Maddison has undergone surgery after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament in pre-season.

The 28-year-old was surrounded by teammates and looked upset as he was treated for the serious injury against Newcastle, with medical staff taking him off the pitch on a stretcher. New manager Thomas Frank said after the game that the injury was “brutal” and its severity has now been confirmed.

Maddison has described the injury as the “lowest low” he’s ever experienced.

PSG evolution offers Tottenham chance to reignite forgotten reputation in Super Cup

18:00 , Richard Jolly

They were European finals that could both be described as historic without accusations of exaggeration. Paris Saint-Germain qualified for Wednesday’s Super Cup by ending their long quest to win the Champions League, becoming the first French club in more than three decades to conquer Europe and, in their 5-0 demolition of Inter Milan, delivering one of the great final performances. It could rank with Barcelona’s evisceration of Manchester United in 2011 or AC Milan’s 4-0 humiliation of Barcelona’s Dream Team in 1994. It was a statement. It was unforgettable.

Whereas many outside N17 and the Tottenham Hotspur fanbase could be forgiven for trying to banish their memories of a May night in Bilbao. If the Champions League showpiece was an example of how football should be played, perhaps its Europa League counterpart was a demonstration of how it shouldn’t.

Spurs are entitled not to care about the carping. A club increasingly defined by not winning anything claimed a continental trophy, a place in the Champions League and, it soon transpired, a meeting with PSG in Udine.

For PSG, last season ended just a month ago as they succumbed to defeat in the Club World Cup final against Chelsea. It means they only returned to pre-season on 6 August and have no new injury concerns.

However, they will be without star midfielder Joao Neves, who was sent off for pulling Marc Cucurella’s hair in that final defeat.

New goalkeeper signing Lucas Chevalier could start in between the sticks, with Gianluigi Donnarumma in a contract standoff with the Parisian giants.

Illia Zabarnyi completed his move from Bournemouth on Tuesday but may not be ready in time.
